Can Your Registrar Cut You Off?

kick out

With the big todo about GoDaddy's cancellation of it's customer (who now has his own campaign:, I decided to look into some other registrars, including my own, to see if they could pull the plug as easily as GoDaddy did. You'll actually be surprised, only a couple of registrars have Terms of Service that set some pretty strong requirements against cancellation:

16.2 Domain suspension, cancellation or transfer. You acknowledge and agree that your domain registration is subject to suspension, cancellation or transfer (cancellation or transfer collectively referred to as, “Cancellation”) (a) to correct mistakes by Dotster, Inc., another registrar, or a Registry Administrator in administering the name or (b) for the resolution of disputes concerning the domain pursuant to an ICANN policy or procedure. You also agree that Dotster, Inc. shall have the right in its sole discretion to suspend, cancel, transfer or otherwise modify a domain registration upon up to seven (7) calendar days prior notice and after such time as Dotster, Inc. receives a properly authenticated order from a court of competent jurisdiction, or arbitration award, requiring the suspension, cancellation, transfer or modification of the domain registration.

DISCLOSURE: I'm a registered affiliate of Dotster but I'm also a personal fan of their service. I reviewed their current specials and found this special tonight that I can extend to my readers:

Transfer your domain to Dotster and pay just $8.99 to renew your domain for an additional year. Click here

I am no attorney, so I'm not advising anyone on who they should or should not register their domains with. I'm fairly sure that the legalize I found in green is good and the yellow is bad. Terms of service that state that they can drop your service without any notice, with little notice… or they may even keep your domain name scare the heck out of me!!!

NOTE: In reviewing Google's domain terms, it appears that they use GoDaddy or eNom… but I can't tell which or how. Full Disclosure: I created the NoDaddy logo. I have affiliate marketing with Commission Junction and am authorized to post affiliate marketing for both Dotster and GoDaddy. In fact, you'll probably see one of GoDaddy's ads on this page! I didn't get to select it.
