When I was unceremoniously terminated from my position as database marketing manager at the local newspaper, it was quite a relief. Having leadership within the newspaper industry that couldn’t comprehend how the Internet would transform human behavior was infuriating and frustrating… and I was tired of battling them every day.
That said, getting fired as a single father is quite a stressful life event. I was escorted out of the building, drove home, and sat on my couch, wondering what was next. Honestly, I sat quietly in prayer, asking God for the next opportunity… and my phone rang. I’m not kidding. On the phone was a good friend, Pat Coyle. Pat asked if I had some time and if I’d be interested in helping the Indianapolis Colts.
Well, Pat… funny you say that!
For the next few years I was able to help the Indianapolis Colts integrate their ticketing, CRM, and utilizing a new company in town – ExactTarget – to deliver email. The goal was to sell more tickets, of course, and to drive a sense of community with season ticket holders and fans alike. The leadership of the Colts was confident they were heading to the Super Bowl, and they wanted a customer experience to match. It was a challenging time with many long nights… but we did it.
We launched Make It Personal, an amazing campaign and strategy that drove fans to the height of excitement.
Ultimately, my success there drew the attention of the leadership at ExactTarget who recruited me as their first Integration Consultant.
I’m forever thankful to the Colts organization for the opportunity they provided me and I always have appreciated Pat’s kindness and mentorship along the way.
Go Colts!
