    FYI we’ve just launched a new, fairer form of ‘hybrid crowdsourcing’ where customers can invite and pay specific designers to submit to design contests – see our press release from today: http://prwire.com.au/permalink/18300/design-contest-website-launches-hybrid-crowdsourcing-model-with-15-000-designers-2

    Key point is this means designers get guaranteed payment regardless of if their design gets selected. Crowdsourcing does not have to be winner takes all or, as you put it, “not great for designers”!     Doug,
    While I commend your ability to Google “logo design”, I find the entire proliferation and celebration of cheap logo design distasteful. The sites you’ve offered simply offer sleek looking icons (akin to “your name here”), with no strategic thought whatsoever.

    Pushing crowdsourcing logo sites – while posting tips on ensuring you get an “original” logo – is laughable if not slightly negligent.

    You are correct on one point: you do get what you pay for. However, my hope for your readers would be they do a little more due diligence before awarding their logo as part of a design contest.

    Hi Steve,

    Appreciate the feedback (really do) and I understand the compromised position branding agencies are under to prove their worth. I have no doubt of your value – I’ve seen firms like Kristian Andersen take companies from nothing to hundreds of millions of dollars – some of it owed to their brand recognition.

    Logo design is under attack – not unlike any other web-based company at this point. We’ve got folks like Chris Anderson yelling “Free!”. Video hosting sites can’t compete with YouTube, Analytics companies have struggled with Google, and CMS systems like Squarespace competing with WordPress.

    I could take a stand and argue “No Spec”, but I’ve personally used some of these services and gotten extremely good results with them. There’s no hiding the fact that as much as you don’t like them, they’re growing in popularity. And for a company that’s cash-strapped and can’t afford a professional branding, why not go for a cheap, sleek logo? They would have done without anything otherwise.

    I’d love to have you do a post on why you would avoid some/many of these services!

    A logo is mirror image of your brand. Your recipe of creating a logo is quite fascinating.
    Yes, the logo of Nike cost $35 in the beginning but now its worth more than $600,000. Only designing a good logo can never help you boost your business. Your services and products must also portray the strength of your logo.
