The NFC and AFC were created during the NFL-AFL merger in 1970. The merger combined teams from the older NFL with teams from the younger AFL (American Football League) and split them into two conferences. Each season, teams in the NFC compete in a regular season of 17 games, followed by playoffs if they qualify. The playoffs culminate in the NFC Championship Game, where the two remaining NFC teams compete to win the NFC title and advance to the Super Bowl, facing the champion of the AFC.

Like the AFC, the NFC includes some of the most popular and storied franchises in NFL history, and its teams have a passionate fan base. The conference has a rich history and has contributed many memorable moments to American football.
