YAML Validator and Formatter: Check Configuration Files for AI, APIs, and Marketing Workflows

A configuration file can look perfectly readable and still fail because a tab slipped into the indentation, a quote was left open, or the same key appeared twice. When that file controls a marketing integration, a deployment, or an AI evaluation, a small formatting mistake can interrupt a much larger workflow.

Our YAML Validator and Formatter is designed to make that troubleshooting easier. Paste your YAML or select a .yaml or .yml file, check the syntax, and review a readable result before copying or downloading it. Line numbers and syntax colors help you connect an error message to the exact place that needs attention.

YAML Validator & Formatter v1.0.0Last Update: Nov 5, 2026

Paste YAML or upload a .yaml or .yml file to check the syntax, list any lines indented with tabs, and pretty-print with two-space indentation.

Paste YAML here, or upload a .yaml or .yml file below. The check runs in your browser. A syntax error includes its line and column. Every line that uses a tab to indent is listed, including lines after the first error.

What Is YAML?

YAML stands for YAML Ain’t Markup Language. It is a plain-text data serialization format built around mappings, sequences, and scalar values. In practical terms, that means named settings, lists of items, and values such as text, numbers, and booleans.

Unlike JSON, YAML can use indentation to express hierarchy and supports comments. Those features make it convenient for files that people maintain alongside software. Indentation must use spaces, not tabs. A two-space indent is a common formatting convention, not a universal requirement imposed by the language.

The official YAML specification explains the indentation rule. It also distinguishes indentation from other whitespace: tabs can be valid inside scalar content or in certain separation positions. A validator should identify indentation mistakes without changing legitimate text.

Why YAML Became a Common Configuration Language

YAML puts related settings together in a structure that is easy to review in a text editor and track in version control. Comments can explain why a setting exists, while nested mappings can organize environments, services, and options without repeating every field name.

That combination fits several established workflows. GitHub Actions uses YAML for automation workflows. Kubernetes accepts YAML manifests for describing resources. OpenAPI descriptions can be written in YAML or JSON to document an API. Teams also use YAML for application settings and continuous integration and delivery pipelines.

The important advantage is not that YAML makes every task simpler. It is that a declarative file can be reviewed, shared, and reused without burying every choice inside application code. The tradeoff is that whitespace and implicit types need careful attention.

Why YAML Matters in AI and Dataset Workflows

AI systems need more than a model and a prompt. They also need descriptions of datasets, repeatable experiment settings, evaluation tasks, and clear instructions about how a workflow should run. YAML is useful for the human-maintained layer around those components.

Dataset cards and discovery: Hugging Face dataset cards are Markdown README files that can include YAML metadata at the top. That metadata describes information such as language, license, task categories, and dataset configurations. It helps people discover and understand a dataset. It does not mean the underlying training records are stored in YAML. See the Hugging Face dataset card documentation.

Training and evaluation settings: Configuration-driven projects can use YAML to record dataset paths, batch sizes, model options, and evaluation choices. Keeping those settings outside the training code makes an experiment easier to compare and repeat. The supported fields still depend on the specific framework.

Prompts and agents: Some frameworks use YAML to organize task descriptions, role instructions, tool choices, and workflow settings. A team can review those instructions as structured text instead of searching through a program for embedded strings. The format itself does not give an agent capabilities or enforce permissions.

Structured context for language models: Named fields, nested sections, and lists can make a prompt or handoff easier for a person and a language model to follow. YAML is not automatically more accurate or more token-efficient than JSON. Model behavior, tokenizer choices, and the complexity of the data all matter. Use the format your tools support, then validate both the syntax and the meaning.

Try a Marketing Workflow Example

This illustrative example describes a campaign and a separate evaluation configuration. Spaces show nesting, a dash introduces each list item, and the literal --- marker starts a document. These field names are examples, not a schema for a specific platform.

---
campaign:
  name: "Product launch"
  enabled: true
  channels:
    - email
    - social
message: "Launch update: early access is open"
---
evaluation:
  name: "Campaign message review"
  dataset: "examples/campaign-messages.jsonl"
  criteria:
    - clarity
    - factual_accuracy
  human_review_required: true

Notice that the message is quoted because it includes a colon followed by a space. The dataset field points to a JSON Lines file. YAML describes the configuration here; it does not replace the dataset itself.

Common YAML Errors to Check

Tabs used for indentation: An editor can make tabs look like spaces even though the parser treats them differently. Replace indentation tabs with spaces and check every reported line. Do not blindly replace tabs inside actual text values.

Inconsistent nesting: A key that is shifted left or right can belong to the wrong parent. Sometimes that causes a syntax error. Sometimes it produces valid YAML with the wrong structure, which is why reviewing the formatted output matters even after validation passes.

Missing or misplaced quotes: Text containing a colon followed by a space or a space followed by a hash can be interpreted as structure or a comment. Quotes make the intended string explicit. Values that look numeric may also need quotes when they are identifiers rather than numbers.

Duplicate keys: A mapping must not repeat the same key. Do not rely on a system silently choosing the last value. Remove the duplicate or use a list when multiple entries are intended.

Unclosed collections and unresolved aliases: A missing bracket, brace, or referenced anchor can break parsing. Error locations point to where the parser detected the problem, which may be just after the original mistake.

How to Use the Validator and Formatter

Paste the YAML you want to check or choose a local file. Validate the input, then use the line and column information to inspect any reported problems. Fix indentation issues in the source rather than expecting a formatter to guess which parent you intended.

Once the input is valid, format it with consistent two-space indentation and inspect the highlighted output. If your input contains multiple documents, check that the document boundaries are still present. Copy the result to your editor or download it as a YAML file, then run the checks required by the application that will consume it.

Syntax validation is the first check, not the final approval. A file can be valid YAML while containing an unsupported Kubernetes field, a misspelled configuration option, an incorrect dataset path, or an unsafe instruction. Keep credentials out of shared examples and review generated configurations before using them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does YAML allow tabs for indentation?

No. YAML indentation uses spaces. Tabs can be valid in some other positions, including scalar content, so they should not be removed indiscriminately.

What does — mean in YAML?

The literal three-hyphen marker starts a YAML document. A stream can contain multiple documents, each introduced by a marker.

Does valid YAML mean my configuration will work?

No. Syntax validation checks the YAML structure. Your application can still reject unsupported fields, missing settings, or incorrect values. Use application-specific checks after validation.

Are AI datasets usually stored in YAML?

YAML often describes dataset metadata and configuration. The actual records may be stored in JSON Lines, CSV, Parquet, or other formats. Hugging Face dataset cards use YAML metadata within a Markdown README.

Is YAML better than JSON for prompts?

Neither format is universally better. YAML can be convenient for human-maintained instructions and comments, while JSON has broad support for structured interchange. Choose based on your tooling and test the result.
