B

B is the Acronym for Billion

Usage dashboards and funding headlines compress a very large count into the letter after the numeral. A figure of 1B is 1,000 times a Million (M), which is 1,000,000,000, or one thousand millions. The same mark is the unit on monthly token volumes, as in a workload of 1B tokens, and on large round financial figures, as in $1B. In United States tech writing, 10B tokens is ten billion tokens.

How Writers Read the Count

Read 1B as 1,000,000,000, which is also 1,000 million. The numeral carries the significant digits. The letter only selects the scale, so dropping or shifting zeros changes the quantity by thousands.

  • Times one thousand. 1B equals 1,000 million. When a chart’s axis is already in millions, multiply by 1,000 before comparing that series with a B figure.
  • Keep every zero. 1B is 1,000,000,000. Reading the same label as 1,000,000 understates the count by a factor of 1,000.
  • Ten means ten of them. 10B is 10 times 1B, so 10,000,000,000, or 10,000 million. It is not 10 million.

Token Volumes and Financial Figures

A labeled illustration, not a vendor statistic: a workload of 1B tokens in a month is 1,000,000,000 tokens counted across that month. One request to a Large Language Model (LLM) is a slice of that total. The B figure appears after many calls, documents, or users are added together for a product, a team, or a billing period.

  • Monthly token volume. Use 1B tokens in a month as a unit example. It does not claim any product’s real traffic.
  • Summed usage. Prompts and replies stay small beside the monthly total. The letter shows up on the sum, not on a single message.
  • Round money. $1B in revenue, valuation, or funding is the same count of dollars: one thousand millions. The dollar sign carries the currency. The letter carries only the scale.

Short Scale on Price Tables

United States tech writing uses the short scale. On that scale, 1B is 1,000,000,000. The long scale, a different convention, uses the same word for a million millions, which is 1,000,000,000,000. An Application Programming Interface (API) price table aimed at this market uses the short-scale count.

  • Short scale. 1B = 1,000,000,000 = 1,000 million. Multiply a per-token rate by that expanded count.
  • Long scale. One billion in that convention is 1,000,000,000,000. That quantity is a trillion on the short scale, not the 1B on a United States token invoice.
  • Checked arithmetic. 10B tokens is ten billion tokens, or 10,000,000,000. Scale the rate by 10 billion, not by 10 million.
