DPV

DPV is the acronym for Delivery Point Validation.

Delivery Point Validation

A process used by the United States Postal Service (USPS) and address verification systems to confirm whether a specific mailing address is recognized as deliverable. Unlike general address validation—which checks if an address is formatted correctly and exists—DPV goes a step further by verifying if mail can actually be delivered to that exact location (e.g., a specific apartment or suite number).

DPV systems work by comparing addresses against an up-to-date USPS database that includes all known delivery points nationwide. This includes residential, commercial, PO Box, and rural route addresses. If an address passes DPV, it means the USPS acknowledges it as valid and deliverable.

Why DPV Matters for Businesses

Using DPV helps organizations reduce failed deliveries, save on postage costs, and maintain clean customer databases. It’s especially critical in e-commerce, direct mail campaigns, and any industry that relies on timely and accurate delivery.

Tip: DPV is often used in combination with CASS (Coding Accuracy Support System) certification, which standardizes address formats, and LACSLink, which updates addresses that have changed due to 911 conversions or municipality updates.
