ERG
ERG is the acronym for Efficiency and Reform Group.

Efficiency and Reform Group
A unit within the UK government’s Cabinet Office. It was formed in 2010 as part of a broader initiative to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and drive reform across the public sector. The ERG brought together several existing government functions, including:
- Office of Government Commerce (OGC): Responsible for procurement, project management, and best practice guidance.
- Directgov: The government’s central web portal for public services and information.
- Digital Public Services: Responsible for the government’s digital strategy and the delivery of online public services.
- Civil Service Capability: Focused on developing the skills and capabilities of civil servants.
Key responsibilities of the ERG:
- Efficiency: Identifying and implementing cost savings and efficiency improvements across government departments and public sector organizations.
- Procurement: Developing and implementing procurement strategies to achieve better value for money in government spending.
- Digital Services: Leading the government’s digital transformation agenda and improving the delivery of online public services.
- Civil Service Reform: Driving reforms to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and accountability of the civil service.
- Transparency: Promoting greater transparency and open data across government to enable public scrutiny and accountability.
The ERG played a central role in the UK government’s efforts to reduce public spending, improve public services, and modernize government operations. It worked closely with government departments and public sector organizations to identify opportunities for savings, share best practices, and drive innovation.
In 2012, the ERG was restructured, and some of its functions were moved to other parts of the Cabinet Office or to newly created entities such as the Government Digital Service (GDS) and the Crown Commercial Service (CCS).
The work of the ERG contributed to significant cost savings and improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of government operations. Its legacy can be seen in the ongoing digital transformation of public services and the continued focus on improving procurement and driving efficiencies across the public sector.
