FSMB

FSMB is the Acronym for Federation of State Medical Boards

The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) is a national non-profit organization that represents the 71 state medical and osteopathic boards across the United States and its territories. The FSMB co-sponsors the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and plays a crucial role in maintaining high standards for physician licensure and practice. Medical boards under the FSMB’s umbrella are responsible for licensing physicians, investigating complaints, disciplining those who violate the law, conducting physician evaluations, and facilitating the rehabilitation of physicians when necessary. The FSMB’s mission is to continually improve the quality, safety, and integrity of healthcare through the development and promotion of high standards for physician licensure and practice.

Member Boards and Responsibilities

The FSMB supports its member boards in their regulatory functions, which include overseeing the licensing process, ensuring compliance with medical practice standards, and addressing issues related to physician conduct and competence. The organization also provides resources and guidance to help medical boards effectively carry out their duties.

Co-Sponsorship of the USMLE

The FSMB co-sponsors the USMLE, a three-step examination for medical licensure in the United States. The USMLE assesses a physician’s ability to apply knowledge, concepts, and principles, and to demonstrate patient-centered skills that are essential for safe and effective patient care. The FSMB works closely with the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) to develop and administer the USMLE, ensuring that it meets the highest standards of reliability and validity.

International Recognition

The FSMB is recognized as a leading authority on medical licensure and discipline issues both within the United States and internationally. The organization collaborates with other national and international bodies to share best practices and promote high standards in medical regulation. The FSMB’s work helps to ensure that physicians practicing in the United States are qualified, competent, and committed to providing safe and effective care to patients.
