MENA

MENA is the Acronym for Middle East and North Africa

A geographic and socio-economic region that spans from Morocco in Northwest Africa to Iran in Southwest Asia. Unlike formal political unions, MENA is a descriptive designation used primarily by international organizations (e.g., the World Bank, IMF, UN), economists, and global businesses to group countries with shared cultural, historical, and economic characteristics.

MENA Geographic Scope

While there is no single official list, the region typically includes about 20 countries and territories. Definitions vary by organization:

  • North Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia. (Sometimes including Western Sahara and Mauritania).
  • The Levant: Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and Iraq. (Israel is often included in economic data but sometimes grouped separately in political contexts.
  • The Arabian Peninsula (GCC + Yemen): Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Yemen.
  • Non-Arab Middle East: Iran (almost always included). Turkey and Afghanistan are sometimes included under broader terms such as MENAT (MENA + Turkey) or MENAP (MENA + Afghanistan and Pakistan).

MENA Strategic and Economic Significance

The region remains a cornerstone of the global economy due to three primary factors:

  • Energy Reserves: The region holds approximately 60% of the world’s oil reserves and 45% of its natural gas. It is home to the world’s largest onshore and offshore fields, primarily in the Gulf states.
  • Maritime Chokepoints: MENA controls several of the world’s most critical shipping lanes, including the Suez Canal, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
  • Demographic “Youth Bulge”: Roughly two-thirds of the population is under the age of 35. This presents a dual reality: a massive potential for a demographic dividend in tech and innovation, alongside a significant challenge for job creation and social stability.

MENA Demographic & Cultural Features

  • Population: Over 500 million people as of the mid-2020s.
  • Religion: The birthplace of three major monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. While Islam is the dominant religion, the region is home to diverse religious and ethnic minorities (e.g., Copts, Kurds, Berbers, Druze).
  • Language: Arabic is the primary language in most of the region, though Persian (Iran), Hebrew (Israel), and various Berber languages (North Africa) are also prominent.
