ROP

ROP is the Acronym for Reorder Point

A specific inventory level that triggers the need to place a new order for more stock. While Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) tells you how much to buy, the Reorder Point (ROP) tells you when to buy it to ensure you never run out of product before the next shipment arrives.

The Goal of ROP

The primary purpose of calculating an accurate ROP is to avoid stockouts (running out of inventory) while also avoiding the costs of overstocking. It accounts for the Lead Time, the gap between hitting order and the physical goods arriving at your warehouse.

Key Components Explained

  • Lead Time: The total time from placing an order to having the items ready for sale (includes processing, shipping, and receiving).
  • Daily Usage/Demand: How many units you sell or use on an average day.
  • Safety Stock: The emergency inventory kept on hand to protect against unexpected surges in demand or supplier delays.

The ROP Formula

To calculate your Reorder Point, you need to know your daily usage and your supplier's lead time.

Example Calculation

Imagine you sell 20 units of a product per day. Your supplier takes 10 days to deliver a new batch, and you like to keep 50 units as a safety buffer.

  • Lead Time Demand: 20 × 10 = 200 units
  • Safety Stock: 50 units
  • ROP: 200 + 50 = 250 units

Action: As soon as your inventory count hits 250, it is time to place a new order.

Why ROP is Critical for Operations

  • Automation: Modern Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and inventory software use ROP to send automatic alerts or purchase orders.
  • Customer Satisfaction: Prevents the Out of Stock message that drives customers to competitors.
  • Cash Flow: Prevents you from ordering too early and tying up cash in inventory that isn't needed yet.

ROP vs. Safety Stock

It is a common mistake to think these are the same. Safety Stock is the floor (the lowest you want your inventory to go), whereas ROP is the alarm (the level that triggers action so you don't crash through that floor).
