Recognition and rewards are the programs a company uses to notice good work and to attach something tangible to that notice. Recognition names the act in public or in a message. A reward is the bonus, gift, or benefit that may follow. Many programs use both, and either can exist without the other.
The Forms a Program Takes
- A named award. Employee of the month, a spot bonus, or a note from a peer.
- A benefit. Extra time off, a gift, or a payment tied to a result the person delivered.
- A record. The notice is written down so a later review can see it, rather than living only in a meeting.
Noticing the Work and Paying for It
| Compared | Recognition | A Reward |
| What the person receives | The work is named and credited | Something tangible is given |
| Can it stand alone | Yes. A public thanks is still recognition | Yes. A bonus can be paid without a ceremony |
| What it is for | A specific act or a body of work | The same act, or a result written into a plan |
