SGD
SGD is the acronym for Speech Generating Device.

Speech Generating Device
Also known as a voice output communication aid, SGD is a type of assistive technology used to help individuals with speech impairments express themselves verbally. SGDs convert text or symbols selected by the user into spoken words using synthetic or recorded voices. They are a central component of what is known as augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), a broader field that supports individuals who are nonverbal or have limited speech.
SGDs are used by people with a range of conditions, including cerebral palsy, ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), autism, stroke-related aphasia, traumatic brain injury, and other developmental or neurological disorders that affect the ability to produce speech.
Modern SGDs vary widely—from dedicated hardware devices with specialized interfaces, to iOS or Android tablets running AAC apps. Users can input messages via touchscreens, switches, eye-tracking, or head pointers, depending on their physical abilities and preferences. The device then speaks the selected message aloud, enabling the user to participate in conversation, request assistance, or express emotions.
Key Features of SGDs
- Text-to-Speech (TTS): Converts typed or selected input into a synthetic voice.
- Symbol-Based Input: Utilizes visual symbols (similar to those in the Picture Exchange Communication System) for non-literate users.
- Customizable Vocabulary: Enables caregivers or therapists to tailor the system to the user’s daily environment and specific needs.
- Access Methods: Supports a variety of input methods, including touch, switch scanning, eye gaze, and voice control.
SGDs are often prescribed and configured with the assistance of speech-language pathologists, who assess an individual’s communication needs and physical capabilities to determine the most suitable device and setup.
These devices are not just tools—they are lifelines, empowering users to participate more fully in family life, education, work, and society as a whole.
