URN

URN is the acronym for Uniform Resource Name.

Uniform Resource Name

A type of Universal Resource Identifier (URI) used to uniquely identify a resource without implying its location or how to access it. Unlike a URL (Uniform Resource Locator), which provides specific information on where a resource can be found and how to retrieve it, a URN serves as a unique and persistent identifier for a resource, regardless of its current state or location. Key characteristics of a URN include:

  1. Uniqueness: Each URN is unique. Once a URN is assigned to a resource, it should not be used for another resource, ensuring that each URN always refers to the same resource.
  2. Persistence: URNs are designed to be long-lasting and remain consistent over time. Even if the resource it identifies changes location or form, the URN itself does not change.
  3. Global Scope: URNs are intended to be globally unique across all scopes and domains.
  4. No Location Information: URNs do not provide any direct means to access the resource. They simply identify it, much like a person’s name identifies them but doesn’t provide their location.

Examples of URNs include ISBN numbers for books, ISSN numbers for periodicals, and UUIDs (Universally Unique Identifiers) used in software systems. For instance, the ISBN ISBN 978-3-16-148410-0 is a URN that uniquely identifies a specific book edition, regardless of where or how it might be stored or accessed.

Such identifiers ensure consistency in tracking, referencing, and managing resources across different systems and platforms.
