Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet editor developed by Microsoft for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and iPadOS. It features calculation or computation capabilities, graphing tools, pivot tables, and a macro programming language called Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). Excel forms part of the Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Office suites of software and has been developed since 1985.
The XLSX file extension was introduced with the release of Microsoft Office 2007. It is based on the Open XML format, which is more advanced and efficient than its predecessor, XLS. The XLS file format, used in earlier versions of Microsoft Excel (97-2003), had several limitations. It could only support a maximum of 65,536 rows and 256 columns per worksheet, and the file size was restricted to 2 GB. Additionally, the XLS format was not ideal for storing large amounts of data or complex formatting. To address these limitations, Microsoft introduced the XLSX format, which offers several advancements over XLS.
Increased Worksheet Size
XLSX files can support up to 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns per worksheet, providing a much larger data storage and manipulation canvas.
Improved File Compression
XLSX files use ZIP compression, resulting in smaller file sizes than XLS. This makes it easier to store and share large spreadsheets.
Enhanced Data Integrity
XLSX files use XML-based formatting, which allows for better data recovery in case of file corruption. The file format also includes built-in data validation and error-checking features.
Better Security
XLSX files support more advanced encryption options, ensuring better protection for sensitive data.
Interoperability
The Open XML format XLSX uses is well-documented and widely supported, making sharing files across different software applications and platforms easier.
Improved Performance
XLSX files are optimized for faster loading and saving times, especially when dealing with large datasets or complex calculations.
Rich Formatting Options
XLSX files support various formatting options, including cell styles, themes, and conditional formatting, allowing users to create visually appealing and professional-looking spreadsheets.
