DTR

DTR is the acronym for Download to Rent.

Download to Rent

A digital distribution model where consumers pay for temporary access to a video or other media content. This rental model allows consumers to download the content to their device and watch it for a limited time, typically within a window of 24 to 48 hours after they start viewing or up to 30 days from the rental if they haven’t pressed play.

DTR is a popular option on TVOD platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, YouTube Movies, and Apple’s iTunes, where users can select from a wide range of movies, television shows, and other content to rent. Once the rental period expires, the content is no longer available to the user unless they choose to rent it again or purchase it.

For marketers, DTR offers strategic insights and opportunities. Since DTR customers actively select content that interests them, this choice behavior can be analyzed to inform targeted marketing campaigns and promotional activities. Marketers might use DTR consumption patterns to understand preferences and trends, aligning advertising efforts with viewer demand. Additionally, DTR services can be paired with promotions or discounts to increase visibility and attract more rental transactions, leveraging peak interest times such as holidays or sequels’ release dates or related media.
