Ethereum Request for Comment

ERC is a standard used to create and issue smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain. It defines a set of rules and protocols that Ethereum-based tokens must follow to ensure compatibility and interoperability within the Ethereum ecosystem. ERC-20 is the most widely used and well-known ERC standard for creating fungible tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. Fungible tokens are interchangeable and divisible, meaning each token has the same value and can be divided into smaller units. Key features of the ERC-20 standard include:

  1. Standardized functions: ERC-20 defines six mandatory functions that a compliant token contract must implement, such as totalSupply(), balanceOf(), transfer(), transferFrom(), approve(), and allowance().
  2. Standardized events: ERC-20 also defines two events that a token contract must emit: Transfer and Approval. These events help track token transfers and approvals within the Ethereum network.
  3. Interoperability: Because all ERC-20 tokens follow the same standard, they can be easily integrated into various decentralized applications (dApps), wallets, and exchanges without custom integration.
  4. Widespread adoption: The ERC-20 standard has been widely adopted by many projects issuing tokens on the Ethereum blockchain, including stablecoins (e.g., USDC, USDT), utility tokens, and governance tokens.

The success of the ERC-20 standard has led to the development of other ERC standards, such as ERC-721 for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and ERC-1155 for multi-tokens.

It’s important to note that while the ERC-20 standard provides a solid foundation for creating tokens, it does not guarantee the quality, security, or value of a token. As with any cryptocurrency or token, it’s essential to conduct thorough research and due diligence before investing or using ERC-20 tokens.
