Megabyte

MB is the acronym for Megabyte.

In computing, a byte is a unit of digital information that is typically made up of 8 bits. Each bit can be either a 0 or a 1, and when grouped together in sets of 8, they represent a single byte. A byte can represent a small amount of information, such as a single character, or a larger amount of information, such as a small image or a section of text.

The prefixes kilo (abbreviated as K), mega (abbreviated as M), giga (abbreviated as G), tera (abbreviated as T), and peta (abbreviated as P) are used to describe larger units of digital information, as follows:

  • Kilobyte (KB): 1 KB is equal to 1,024 bytes.
  • Megabyte (MB): 1 MB is equal to 1,024 KB or 1,048,576 bytes.
  • Gigabyte (GB): 1 GB is equal to 1,024 MB, 1,048,576 KB, or 1,073,741,824 bytes.
  • Terabyte (TB): 1 TB is equal to 1,024 GB, 1,048,576 MB, 1,073,741,824 KB, or 1,099,511,627,776 bytes.
  • Petabyte (PB): 1 PB equal to 1,024 TB, 1,048,576 GB, 1,073,741,824 MB, or 1,099,511,627,776 KB.

The prefixes can be used to describe the size of digital files or the amount of storage space on a device. For example, a 5 MB image file is 5 megabytes in size, and a hard drive with a capacity of 1 TB can store up to 1 terabyte of data.
