NLE

NLE is the acronym for Non-Linear Editing.

Non-Linear Editing

A form of video (or audio) editing where the original content is not modified during editing. Instead, the NLE system uses computer software to access and edit the video or audio files. This is a significant advancement from traditional linear editing, where footage was edited sequentially, often directly on the tape, making it time-consuming and inflexible.

In a Non-Linear Editing system, editors can access any part of the digital footage at any time, allowing them to jump back and forth, cut segments, add effects, and rearrange scenes without degrading the original footage. This process is much more efficient and versatile, providing many creative possibilities.

NLE has become the standard in professional and consumer video editing, with popular software examples including Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, and DaVinci Resolve. These tools offer extensive features for cutting, arranging, layering, and enhancing videos, greatly expanding video production capabilities.
