TSB is the Acronym for Telecommunication Standardization Bureau

The Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB) is the permanent secretariat of the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T). The ITU-T is responsible for developing and maintaining international standards for telecommunications and information communication technology, ensuring global interoperability and compatibility.

Standards Development Process

The TSB oversees the standards development process, facilitating collaboration among ITU-T's Member States, Private Sector Members, and Academia Members. The World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) is the governing conference that convenes every four years to set the ITU-T's strategic direction and work program.

Key Standards

The ITU-T has developed numerous key standards, including:

  • X.509: A standard for public key infrastructure (PKI) used in cybersecurity.
  • Y.3172 and Y.3173: Standards related to machine learning in telecommunications.
  • H.264/MPEG-4 AVC: A standard for video compression widely used in video streaming and broadcasting.

Leadership and Structure

The TSB is based at the ITU headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The current director of the TSB is Seizo Onoe, who commenced his 4-year term on 1 January 2023. Onoe succeeded Chaesub Lee, who previously held the position. The TSB plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth functioning of the ITU-T and the successful implementation of its standards.
