A story on a major news site is not a banner the brand bought. It is an editorial page a journalist chose to publish, and the marketing job is narrow: notice whether that page sends a reader onward, whether it gives the team a source they can cite, and whether it puts the brand’s name where buyers already read.
The page still belongs to the newsroom. Headlines, quotations, and links are edited for that audience, not for a campaign calendar. The BBC is the public broadcaster of the United Kingdom, with television, radio, and a written news site. Save the page, count who arrives, and describe the mention as written.
What a Placement Is Used For
A placement is the published story, interview, or brief in which the brand, a product, or an executive appears. On the BBC, that page is an editorial decision, used as proof that an outside editor found the subject worth reporting. The proof is not a sponsorship on the same site, not a paid native campaign, and not a wire release the company issued itself.
- Referral Traffic. Readers who want the next detail click through to the brand’s site, and the news domain appears as the referrer. Those visits can be split from search, email, and paid social.
- Citation. The story’s address is what a team pastes into a pitch, a board note, or a sales deck. Someone outside the room can open it, and the headline and date travel with the address.
- Brand Mention. The name can sit in a sentence that has no link. Monitoring still counts the sentence. The wording around the name is the mention, and a critical line counts as fully as a friendly one.
The newsroom does not have to endorse the product. A careful story can name a brand and also quote a critic. Report the page that was published. A passing reference is not a recommendation, and calling it one adds a claim the story never made.
How Teams Record the Visit and the Mention
When the story links out, the destination should be a stable page, not a path that expires at the end of the quarter. Give that page a clear Uniform Resource Locator (URL) and use the same path in the press note, the sales deck, and the analytics view. After a revision, the older path should still resolve so earlier citations keep working.
Keep the three results in separate fields. Audience size on the news site is not a visit, a source, or the sentence.
| Use | What It Does |
| Referral Traffic | Counts readers who click from the story to the brand site, with the news domain as the referrer. |
| Citation | Stores the story’s address, headline, and date so a later pitch can open the page. |
| Brand Mention | Logs the wording around the name, including a story that names the brand and does not link. |
Referral traffic is only the click from the story to the brand site. A widely read story can send almost no one when the link is buried or missing. If a tracking parameter is allowed, keep an untagged view so a stripped parameter does not hide the visit.
A citation is the page you hand to someone else. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) work may log that link as a referring domain. Note whether it is followed, whether the anchor is the brand name, and whether the page is still live. Discovery is not a promise of a higher ranking.
Read the mention before it is restated. An announcement is not praise, and a named flaw stays in the record. Correct a wrong fact, or explain it on the brand’s own page, rather than cropping the criticism out of the clip.
The address shows the page exists. The referrer shows a reader crossed to the brand. The sentence shows what was printed. That is the whole use of the placement.
