IMF

IMF is the Acronym for International Monetary Fund

Countries that need foreign currency during a crisis, or that want a published view of one another’s economies, work through this fund. Membership is nearly global. Financing comes with conditions the borrowing government agrees to carry out.

What Members Use It For

  • Balance-of-payments support. A member can draw on the fund when it cannot pay for imports or defend its currency.
  • Surveillance. Staff review each member’s economy and publish the findings.
  • Technical help. Treasuries and central banks can ask for help building statistics, tax systems, or bank supervision.
