The conventional brightness and color envelope that video has used since the tube-television era, defining how dark, how bright, and how colorful an image is allowed to be. It remains the baseline every screen, browser, and platform can display without special handling.
In practical terms, standard dynamic range means 8 bits of precision per color channel, the Rec. 709 color gamut, and a reference brightness of roughly 100 nits. Those limits date to the physics of cathode-ray tubes, yet they still describe the overwhelming majority of video published today.

High dynamic range (HDR) expands every one of those limits, and the contrast between the two standards explains most of the confusion around modern video delivery.

Why Most Web Video Stays SDR
Browsers, embedded players, and older devices handle standard range footage identically, while their treatment of high dynamic range varies from gorgeous to washed out depending on the screen, the operating system, and the tone-mapping applied when a display cannot reproduce the extended values. Publishing in standard range removes that variability, keeps files smaller, and guarantees the audience sees roughly what the editor saw.
What SDR Means for Marketers
Brand color only exists if it renders consistently, and standard dynamic range is still the only envelope that guarantees consistency across every customer screen. Unless a campaign controls its playback environment end to end, delivering in standard range protects both the palette and the page weight; footage shot in HDR simply gets tone-mapped down during the encode.
