ABM

ABM is the Acronym for Automated Banking Machine

A network of Automated Banking Machines (ABMs) provides customers of financial institutions with 24-hour access to cash from their bank accounts. These machines are typically located in high-traffic areas such as malls, grocery stores, and airports, and are owned and operated by either the bank itself or a third-party provider. The use of ABMs has become increasingly popular in recent years due to their convenience and efficiency, allowing customers to conduct banking transactions without the need for a human teller.

How ABMs Work

ABMs use a combination of hardware and software to process transactions. The machine accepts a customer's debit or credit card, verifies the account information, and then dispenses the requested amount of cash. Some ABMs also offer additional services such as bill payment, account balance inquiries, and money transfers.

  • Hardware: The physical components of an ABM, including the card reader, keypad, display screen, and cash dispenser.
  • Software: The programming that controls the ABM's functions, including transaction processing and security measures.

CarIFS Network

Caribbean Integrated Financial Services Inc. (CarIFS) was a Barbados-based interbank network that provided ABM services to various financial institutions in Barbados. The company offered customers 24-hour access to cash from their bank accounts via any affiliated ABM. However, the network was shut down in 2020, and card transactions were moved to the international VISA and Mastercard network. The move to international networks resulted in increased fees for customers and merchants, which was met with some criticism.
