CVC

CVC is the acronym for Card Validation Code.

Card Validation Code

A security feature used on MasterCard credit and debit cards to enhance protection against fraud during card-not-present transactions, such as online, phone, or mail-order purchases. It is similar to the CVV (Card Verification Value) used by Visa and the CID (Card Identification Number) used by American Express and Discover.

Key Points about CVC:

  1. Purpose: The CVC is used to confirm that the individual making a purchase has the physical card. It helps prevent fraudulent transactions by adding an additional layer of security, particularly when the cardholder is not present.
  2. Types of CVC:
    • CVC1: This code is encoded in the magnetic stripe of the card and is used when a card is swiped during in-person transactions.
    • CVC2: This is the three-digit code printed on the back of MasterCard, near or on the signature panel, and is used for card-not-present transactions (like online or over-the-phone purchases).
  3. Location on the Card: The CVC2 is a three-digit code located on the back of MasterCard cards, near the signature strip. It is separate from the card number and is used to verify transactions where the card isn’t physically presented.
  4. Data Security: PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) prohibits merchants from storing the CVC2 after a transaction is completed, to minimize the risk of unauthorized access or fraud in case of data breaches.

Comparison to Other Terms:

  • CVV (Card Verification Value): Used by Visa.
  • CID (Card Identification Number): Used by American Express and Discover.

The CVC is a security measure designed to help authenticate card-not-present transactions and reduce the likelihood of fraud by ensuring that the person making the transaction has the actual card.
