One of the most common Incoterms (International Commercial Terms) used in global trade. It defines the exact point at which the ownership, cost, and risk of goods transfer from the seller to the buyer during the shipping process.
How FOB Works
Under a standard FOB agreement, the seller is responsible for the goods until they are physically loaded onto the shipping vessel at a designated port. Once the goods pass the ship’s rail, the buyer takes full responsibility.
- The Seller’s Job: Get the goods to the port, handle export clearance, and pay to load them onto the ship.
- The Buyer’s Job: Pay for the main sea freight, insurance, unloading at the destination port, and inland transport to their warehouse.
Two Critical Variations

Why FOB Matters to Your Bottom Line
- Risk Management: If a container falls overboard in the middle of the ocean, the FOB point determines which company’s insurance must cover the claim.
- Accounting (Revenue Recognition): Under FOB Shipping Point, the seller can record the sale as Revenue as soon as the truck leaves their warehouse.
- Under FOB Destination, they must wait until the customer signs for the delivery.
- Cost Control: Buyers often prefer FOB Shipping Point because it allows them to choose their own freight forwarder and potentially negotiate better shipping rates than the seller would offer.
Common Pitfall: FOB vs. CIF
