The regional Internet registry (RIR) system evolved to divide the responsibility for managing Internet number resources to a registry for each of five regions of the world. The regional Internet registries are informally liaised through the Number Resource Organization (NRO), which acts on matters of global importance. The Latin America and Caribbean Network Information Centre (LACNIC) is the RIR for Latin America and the Caribbean.
Internet Number Resources
LACNIC manages the allocation and registration of Internet number resources, including IP addresses and autonomous system (AS) numbers.
Regional Responsibility
LACNIC is responsible for managing Internet number resources within the Latin America and Caribbean region. It is one of five RIRs worldwide, each responsible for a specific region.
Coordination Through NRO
LACNIC, along with other RIRs, is informally liaised through the NRO. The NRO acts as a coordinating body for matters of global importance related to Internet number resources.
