
The addressing and routing system that moves every packet across the internet: the IP in TCP/IP. Every connected device is assigned an IP address, and routers use those addresses to forward each packet, hop by hop, toward its destination. The protocol is deliberately minimal: best-effort delivery with no guarantees of order or arrival, leaving reliability to the layers above it.
IPv4 and IPv6
- IPv4: The 1981 original, with 32-bit addresses (about 4.3 billion), long since exhausted, kept workable by address sharing and translation.
- IPv6: The successor, with 128-bit addresses (effectively inexhaustible), now carrying a large share of global traffic as networks and devices migrate.
Why Marketers Care
- Geotargeting and localization: IP-derived location underpins regional ad delivery, content licensing, pricing, and compliance boundaries.
- Fraud and bot filtering: IP intelligence (reputation, data-center detection, proxy identification) is a first line of defense in ad verification and analytics hygiene.
- The privacy shift: IP addresses are personal data under GDPR, and relays such as Apple’s Private Relay increasingly mask them, another identifier fading from the marketer’s toolkit alongside third-party cookies.
- Everything rides on it: VoIP, IPTV, and the IoT are all services rebuilt on top of the Internet Protocol; the naming convention is the tell.
