Long Term Evolution for Machines

LTE-M (also called LTE Cat-M1 or Cat-M) is a cellular IoT technology. Think of it as NB-IoT‘s faster, more capable sibling. It’s designed for IoT devices that need more bandwidth or mobility than NB-IoT can provide while still maintaining good power efficiency.

The key difference from NB-IoT is that LTE-M uses a wider bandwidth (1.4 MHz versus NB-IoT’s 180 kHz). This gives it several advantages:

• Higher data rates (up to 1 Mbps, compared to NB-IoT’s 250 kbps)
• Support for voice communications
• Better handling of device mobility (works at speeds up to 100 km/h)
• Lower latency (around 10-15 milliseconds)

Real-world applications are quite different from NB-IoT, too. While NB-IoT is great for stationary sensors like water meters or parking sensors, LTE-M is better suited for:

• Asset tracking for moving vehicles
• Wearable devices that need voice capability
• Medical devices requiring real-time monitoring
• Security systems needing quick response times

The trade-off? LTE-M devices typically use more power than NB-IoT devices, though still much less than regular cellular. It’s like choosing between a motorcycle (LTE-M) and a bicycle (NB-IoT) – both are more efficient than a car (regular cellular). Still, the motorcycle uses more fuel for its extra capabilities.
