An international group of experts responsible for developing video and audio encoding standards, the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) operates under the joint supervision of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The group sets standards for media coding, including compression coding of audio, video, graphics, and genomic data, as well as transmission and file formats for various applications.
Standards and Applications
MPEG is also used to refer to the series of video and audio compression standards developed by the group, such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and others. These standards are used for encoding digital video and audio data, allowing efficient storage and transmission while maintaining high quality. The MPEG standards have been widely adopted in various multimedia applications, including digital television, streaming video, video-on-demand, and more.
- Older formats: Typically use MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4 AVC media coding, as well as MPEG-2 systems transport streams and program streams.
- Newer systems: Typically use the MPEG base media file format and dynamic streaming (a.k.a. MPEG-DASH).
Organization and Structure
MPEG is organized under ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29 – Coding of audio, picture, multimedia and hypermedia information (ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee 1, Subcommittee 29). Together with JPEG, MPEG operates under this joint technical committee to develop and maintain standards for multimedia coding and transmission.
