Safe for work describes material a person can open in an ordinary office without violating a workplace rule or surprising the people around them. It is the absence of sexual content, graphic violence, and strong profanity. The label is a courtesy to the viewer. It does not rate quality, and it is not a promise that everyone will approve.
The opposite label is Not Safe For Work (NSFW). One says the material is acceptable in the office. The other says to wait. Neither one is a legal standard.
What People Use the Label to Promise
- No sexual content. Nothing a workplace policy would treat as explicit.
- No graphic harm. Nothing built to shock with injury or gore.
- Still a judgment. The author or the community applied it. A viewer may disagree.
Acceptable in the Office and Not
| Compared | Acceptable in the Office | Not Acceptable in the Office |
| Sexual content | Absent | Present |
| Graphic violence | Absent | Present, or extreme enough to need a stronger warning |
| Where it is opened | An ordinary workplace | Somewhere private |
