UAA

UAA is the Acronym for Undeliverable As Addressed

UAA mail is a significant operational and financial burden for both USPS and mailers, often leading to delays, lost communications, and increased costs. When mail is classified as UAA, the USPS may return it to the sender, forward it to a new address if available, or dispose of it, depending on the mail class and the presence of forwarding instructions.

Common Reasons for UAA Mail

UAA mail arises from several address-related issues, including:

  • Recipient relocation: The recipient has moved without filing a Change of Address (COA) with the USPS.
  • Missing information: The mailpiece lacks critical details such as apartment or suite numbers.
  • Incorrect ZIP codes: The ZIP code provided does not match the intended delivery address.
  • Outdated addresses: The addressee no longer resides at the listed address.
  • Illegible addressing: The address on the mailpiece is not clearly written or printed.

Reducing UAA Rates

To minimize UAA mail, businesses are encouraged to use USPS-certified address verification tools, including:

  • CASS (Coding Accuracy Support System): Ensures addresses are correctly formatted and standardized.
  • NCOALink (National Change of Address): Provides access to a secure dataset of approximately 160 million permanent change-of-address records.
  • Address Correction Services: Helps update and correct addresses before mailing.

Nixie Labels

In USPS processing systems, UAA designations are often accompanied by a Nixie label. This label indicates the specific reason for non-delivery, allowing mailers to update their records and improve future deliverability. By leveraging these tools and understanding the common causes of UAA mail, businesses can significantly reduce the volume of undeliverable mail, saving costs and improving communication efficiency.
