The State of Content Marketing 2013

Fantastic infographic from the folks at Wishpond on The State of Content Marketing 2013. Every client we’re working with has a content strategy driving traffic and attention to their site through search and social media. Why?

Companies that blog have 55% more traffic to their websites? Content marketing is fast becoming a regular marketing tool (marketers now spend 25% of their marketing budget on content marketing). And it’s having a huge impact on how consumers view and interact with companies: 68% of consumers spend time reading content from brands they are interested in.

The issue with Content Marketing is simply that it isn’t always possible to quantify how it will impact the bottom line. Stats such as these certainly help, but the bigger picture is often lost in a world where results are expected instantly. You spend a few hours writing, editing and publishing a blog post, but then it doesn’t generate traffic or sales; this makes it incredibly difficult to justify the expense.

I’m a former Content Marketer (now just a marketer), but these little facts and figures would certainly have come in useful back then. People now are increasingly doing it for all the wrong reasons – i.e. links. For me, the exposure of writing or publishing something unique and exciting far outweighs a basic algorithmic authority signal. I want it to be shared by real people with a genuine interest, not any old bot or low quality blog. Good stuff.
