A collaborative initiative among telecommunications standards organizations, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) develops and maintains protocols for mobile technologies. Its work spans multiple generations of mobile networks, from 2G to 5G, ensuring interoperability and advancing connectivity standards globally.
Organizational Structure
3GPP operates through a partnership model involving Organizational Partners (OPs) and Market Representation Partners (MRPs). The OPs are seven national or regional standards bodies, while MRPs represent various stakeholders in the telecommunications industry.
Technical Workstreams
3GPP organizes its work into three primary Technical Specification Groups (TSGs):
- TSG RAN: Focuses on radio access networks, including radio interface protocols and network architecture.
- TSG SA: Addresses service and system aspects, such as overall architecture and service capabilities.
- TSG CT: Deals with core network and terminal-related specifications, ensuring seamless integration and functionality.
Key Standards and Technologies
3GPP has developed and maintained numerous standards across different generations of mobile networks:
- 2G and related technologies: GSM, GPRS, and EDGE.
- 3G and related technologies: UMTS, HSPA, and HSPA+.
- 4G and related technologies: LTE, LTE Advanced, and LTE Advanced Pro.
- 5G and related technologies: 5G NR, 5G-Advanced, and evolved IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS).
These standards ensure compatibility, enhance performance, and drive innovation in mobile telecommunications.
