EDGE

EDGE is the Acronym for Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution

Often referred to as 2.75G, EDGE is a high-speed mobile data technology that bridges 2G (GSM) and 3G (UMTS) networks. It significantly improved data transfer speeds over its predecessor, GPRS, without requiring a complete overhaul of existing cellular infrastructure.

Core Terminology

  • 8-PSK (8-Phase Shift Keying): Unlike the GMSK modulation used in standard GSM, EDGE uses 8-PSK. This allows the network to transmit three bits of data per radio symbol instead of one, effectively tripling the potential data rate.
  • Backward Compatibility: A key feature of EDGE. It was designed to work on existing GSM frequencies (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), allowing carriers to upgrade software and hardware modules rather than building new cell towers.
  • EGPRS (Enhanced General Packet Radio Service): The technical name for the packet-switched service provided by EDGE. While EDGE refers to the air interface, EGPRS refers to the upgraded GPRS service.
  • MCS (Modulation and Coding Scheme): EDGE uses nine different schemes (MCS-1 through MCS-9). The network dynamically switches between these based on the quality of the radio signal:
    • MCS-1 to 4: Uses GMSK (robust but slower).
    • MCS-5 to 9: Uses 8-PSK (faster but requires a cleaner signal).
  • Throughput: While theoretical speeds can reach 473.6 kbps, real-world speeds typically range from 100 kbps to 200 kbps.

Before 3G became ubiquitous, EDGE was the broadband of the mobile world. It enabled the first generation of smartphones (such as the original iPhone) to access the internet fast enough for mobile web browsing to be viable rather than a frustrating experience.

Note: On modern smartphones, if you see an E icon next to your signal bars, you are currently using an EDGE connection. In today’s 5G world, this usually feels quite slow and is typically used as a fallback in remote areas.
