TSG

TSG is the Acronym for Technical Specification Group

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) organizes its work into three different streams: Radio Access Networks (TSG RAN), Core Network and Terminals (TSG CT), and Services and Systems Aspects (TSG SA). Each Technical Specification Group (TSG) focuses on specific areas of mobile telecommunications standards development. The TSG RAN is responsible for the development of radio interface standards, while the TSG CT focuses on core network and terminal-related standards. The TSG SA covers services and systems aspects, including the evolved IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS).

Technical Specification Groups

The 3GPP has three main Technical Specification Groups (TSGs), each with a distinct focus:

  • TSG RAN: Focuses on the development of radio interface standards for mobile telecommunications.
  • TSG CT: Responsible for core network and terminal-related standards.
  • TSG SA: Covers services and systems aspects, including the evolved IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS).

Standards Development

The 3GPP’s work spans various generations of mobile telecommunications standards, including:

  • 2G, 2.5G, and 2.75G standards: GSM, GPRS, and EDGE.
  • 3G standards: UMTS, HSPA, and HSPA+.
  • 4G standards: LTE, LTE Advanced, and LTE Advanced Pro.
  • 5G standards: 5G NR and 5G-Advanced.

Organizational Structure

The 3GPP is a partnership project with seven Organizational Partners (OPs), which are national or regional telecommunication standards organizations, and various Market Representation Partners (MRPs). This structure ensures that the standards developed are comprehensive and widely applicable.
