When Should You Be Redesigning Your Logo?

The team from Clear Designs have published this beautiful infographic with some thoughts around what you need to know about logo redesign, reasons why you should redesign, some do’s and don’ts of redesign, some logo redesign mistakes, and some feedback from industry experts.

Three Four Reasons to Redesign Your Logo

  1. Company Merger – mergers, acquisitions, or company spin-offs will often require a new logo to symbolise the new company.
  2. The Company Grows Beyond Its Original Identity – for a company that is expanding its offering, such as introducing new products, services, etc. redesigning their logo can be an effective way to signal the company’s evolution.
  3. Company Revitalization – companies that have been around a long time and may need a logo.

I’d like to add another reason! Mobile viewports and high definition digital screens have absolutely changed how your logo is viewed. Gone are the days of ensuring your logo looks good in black and white on a fax machine.

Nowadays, having a favicon is needed but may only be viewed at 16 pixels by 16pixels… nearly impossible to look good. And it may go all the way up to an image on a retina display at 227 pixels per inch. That requires some beautiful design work to get it right. Taking advantage of higher definition screens is a valid reason, in my opinion, to get a new logo developed!

If you haven’t redesigned your logo in the last few years, your logo may appear quite aged to anyone doing research online (which is just about everyone!).
