What is Random Access Memory?

A form of computer data storage that stores frequently used data for rapid access by the central processing unit (CPU) of a computer. RAM is volatile memory, meaning that it is wiped clean when the computer is turned off, and all data stored in RAM is lost.

RAM is used to store the operating system, programs, and data that the CPU actively uses. When a computer is turned on, the operating system, drivers, and other programs are loaded into RAM from the hard drive, and when a program is opened, the data it needs to function is also loaded into RAM.

RAM is measured in bytes, just like hard drive storage, but it is typically measured in terms of gigabytes (GB) or megabytes (MB). Most modern computers come with at least 4GB of RAM, but high-performance systems or servers can have much more. The amount of RAM that a computer has will determine how many programs can be run simultaneously and how smoothly they will run.

The CPU accesses data stored in RAM much faster than data stored on a hard drive, so having more RAM can greatly improve a computer’s performance. When a computer runs out of RAM, it will use a portion of the hard drive called virtual memory, which is much slower than RAM. This is why a computer may slow down or freeze when it runs out of RAM.
