Social Media Usage by US Region

While Silicon Valley, New York and Chicago may be the hot-beds of technology, media and advertising, a new survey shows that small and mid-sized businesses in the Great Plains and Southeast are leading the nation in social media adoption. Looking at the national findings, 75% of respondents say their business does not currently have branded social media sites. Do these findings allude to a shift in early adopters to the middle of the nation?

Conducted by SurveyMonkey, a survey of more than 500 small and medium-sized business decision makers provides a snapshot of social media adoption by region:

  • Great Plains and Southeast states are more likely to have branded social media channels at 30% and 28%, respectively.
  • Decision makers for businesses within the Great Plains (22%) and Southeast (28%) are also among the most active via social media on behalf of their company

In addition to use of social media, the survey provides insight into how decision makers are approaching employee use of social media:

  • 15% of those surveyed have issued a social media policy to employees
  • 6% have fired an employee for misuse of social media

The exciting thing about this statistic is that the majority of companies have not embraced social media given the opportunity to. If your company is one of them, you have the potential of leap frogging competitors simply by adopting a social media strategy. What are you waiting for?
