Hashtag was the word of the year in 2013, there was a baby named Hashtag, and the word was outlawed in France (mot-dièse).

Hashtags continue to have enormous benefits when utilized appropriately in social media – especially as their use has expanded beyond Twitter and into Facebook. Just as a keyword is essential for finding information online, hashtags are important as well. We’ve written about what a hashtag is in the past. Twitter Search – most folks look to Twitter search to find the latest tweets on a topic, but you can also utilize it to find Twitter accounts to follow. On the top left of Twitter, you can click People and identify the top accounts for the hashtag you’re utilizing. It can also provide a target to work on if your competitors are identified for a hashtag but you aren’t.

Twubs is a site where you can actually search, register and even brand a specific hashtag. They also have tools like moderated tweet walls that you can utilize for your next event or conference.


Trendsmap – You start with a view of your region where you can see the trending topics. You can scroll the maps by dragging to another area, or zoom in or out using the plus/minus icons. When you see something that looks interesting click on that topic for more information such as graphs of the volume of tweets locally vs. worldwide, what the topic is most likely about, images, links, and most recent tweets. You can also see where else this topic popular by clicking on the topic within the detail display, or what else are people tweeting about at this location by clicking on the location name.


Geochirp – If your business or event is regional, you can research hashtags regionally using Geochirp. Geochirp is a really simple to use map based tool for locating Tweets and twitter accounts within a specific geography.

    Let’s take Facebook, by way of example. Its comments box is an ideal feature for it to be used as being a customer service toll. Conversely, Twitter hashtags provide a unique tagging system for discussions.

    Thank you for including Tagboard – shocked, that I just came across this post! We are still going strong and have implemented a dozen of features since this was posted including moderation, live mode, etc… Yesterday’s Facebook announcement was amazing for us! Although we have been pulling #hashtags from their platform since October, this announcement encouraged the use of #hashtags on FB & we have been seeing incredible uptake and sooo much content utilizing the #hashtag over the past 12 hours.

    I really like your blog – It’s one of the few that I follow quite religiously but there’s one thing that I don’t understand, because no one ever mentions this – not you, not Buffer.

    1. It gets you listed (because of seriously sloppy automation mostly on IFTTT and this “notice me” trend) –

    2. It gets you more engagement but ONLY because of bots and automated retweeting.

    To test this theory, I built a bot that did nothing but retweet Jeff Bullas for 2 months (because Jeff’s writers use more hashtags than anyone I know) and my bot has been listed over 1000 times AND it has a higher social authority than I do according to Followerwonk! Doesn’t follow anyone doesn’t do anything but RT Jeff Bullas and #growthhacking. Don’t bother building a list with a #socialmedia or #emailmarketing – you’ll get rubbish

    I don’t want to be listed because of #SSA or get more bot engagement. So IMHO, hashtags are don’t add any real value (except for Twitter chats and conferences etc). I wrote a post about this on Medium.

    Ritetag is great but not because it gives you better hashtags (in fact, their hashtags don’t get you listed). Ritetag is great because lets you add pictures, memes and gifs into your tweets effortlessly.
